He graduated in 1974 from Oregon State University in journalism and in 1983 from the University of Oregon School of Law. Jim worked as a daily newspaper journalist in Oregon in the 1970s. After beginning his legal practice, he represented Eugene in the Oregon Legislature from 1987 to 1995. He then chaired the Democratic Party of Oregon from 1999 to 2007. He is married and the proud father of two daughters and grandfather to a grandchild. He enjoys gardening, camping, bicycling and golfing.
