Michael S. Yu received his undergraduate degree from University of Michigan College of Engineering in 2007, graduating Cum Laude with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. After graduation, he spent three years in Korea, teaching English at a private kindergarten, AP Physics at Princeton Review, then privately tutoring students.

Mr. Yu returned to Michigan and attended Wayne State University Law School, graduating Cum Laude in 2015. During law school, he focused his studies on immigration and international law. He served as the president of the Asian Pacific American Law Students Association (APALSA), and also jointly wrote a directed study on the WTO Appellate Body's practice. Furthermore, he served as a student attorney with the Wayne State Asylum and Immigration Law Clinic, where he represented indigent and low-income clients.

During law school, he interned at the Korean Commercial Arbitration Board (KCAB) in Seoul, South Korea, where he assisted with the coordination of the Asia-Pacific Regional FDI moot competition in Seoul. He also interned at the Office of Senator Hoon-Yung Hopgood, Michigan State Senate, where he researched current state legislative issues.

After finishing law school, he has since practiced in the field of immigration law, where he represented clients in business-based and family-based petitions before USCIS, the National Visa Center (NVC), and various consulates worldwide. He also worked on cases involving removal of conditions on permanent residence, work authorization, asylum applications, and currency seizures by Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
