Biography

Meet Colby Burt — insurance lawyer in Orlando

Colby Burt is an attorney based in Orlando, FL. The practice focuses on Insurance and Slip & Fall. Colby has over 16 years of legal experience. Currently practicing at Morgan & Morgan.

Colby A. Burt was born in Ormond Beach, Florida. He received his undergraduate degree in Sport Management from the Florida State University. Upon graduation in 2004, Mr. Burt moved to Washington, taking an Inside Sales position with the Seattle Supersonics professional basketball franchise. In this position, Mr. Burt was exposed to the business side of sports, where he was responsible for selling season ticket packages and luxury suites to prospective clients. In 2005, Mr. Burt relocated to Orlando and took a similar position within the University of Central Florida’s Athletic Department. Here, he extended his sports business career by spearheading the department responsible for selling season ticket packages to help fund the construction of the on-campus football stadium.

In 2006, Mr. Burt enrolled in Nova Southeastern University’s Shepard Broad College of Law in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Upon graduation, Mr. Burt moved back home to Ormond Beach, Florida to work in his father’s law firm, practicing construction law and general civil litigation. In 2012, Mr. Burt moved to Orlando where he worked at a high volume, full-service litigation firm. Mr. Burt specialized in foreclosure defense, representing homeowners in default of their mortgage obligations. After learning extensively about civil procedure and litigation in all phases of a civil case for over two years, Mr. Burt shifted gears and took a position with a boutique litigation firm in Maitland, Florida. Here, he worked exclusively on a highly litigated federal construction loan litigation case as well as general civil cases.

In 2014, Mr. Burt returned to foreclosure litigation, this time representing mortgage servicers and investment groups in the foreclosure of residential mortgages. It was here that Mr. Burt honed his research and litigation skills handling a heavy caseload over four years of practice.

In May of 2018, Mr. Burt joined Morgan & Morgan. For five years, he focused his practice on First Party Property Insurance claims, representing homeowners in lawsuits against their homeowners insurance companies who deny valid property damage claims or only agree to compensate the homeowner for less than the total cost of repairs.

In February of 2023, Mr. Burt joined Morgan & Morgan Operations as Attorney and Senior Director of Premises Presuit. In this role, Mr. Burt manages staff and attorneys who manage and oversee all premises liability cases at the presuit stage from inception until litigation.
