James "Jim" Ryan received his undergraduate degree at the University of Minnesota, where he walked on for the national championship hockey team, seeing ice time with legendary coach Herb Brooks and six members of the historic 1980 Olympic team. Ryan also has the distinction of being from a family that boasts five Super Bowl rings: His father is legendary coach Buddy Ryan, who won Super Bowl III with Joe Namath and the New York Jets, and was the mastermind behind the historic 1985 Chicago Bears. His brothers, Rex and Rob, also possess three Super Bowl titles.

Ryan obtained a master's degree at the University of Notre Dame and graduated from the St. Louis University School of Law in 1998. Since then, he has been fighting for the rights of injured people for almost 20 years. He is licensed to practice in Illinois, Missouri and the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri. Ryan is also a member of the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association (ITLA), the Missouri Association of Trial Lawyers (MATA) and several other legal groups.
