I was born in Weehawken, New Jersey, the oldest of three children. My parents emigrated from Cuba. I graduated from Northeastern Bible College and attended the University of Florida College of Law where I earned my Juris Doctor with Honors.

After college, I went on to attend and graduate from the University of Florida Graduate School with a Masters of Law in Taxation. I also did my graduate study in Theology at the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and Reformed Theological Seminary, and I am ordained as a minister. I am actively involved in various community organizations and Redeemer Presbyterian Church, where I serve as an elder. I am a graduate of the Leadership Lakeland Class XXIX.

My wife, Dámaris, and I have been married for over 30 years, and our daughter and son-in-law are both artists who live in the New England area. I am an avid reader and enjoy cooking, entertaining friends, and traveling with my wife. In my spare time, I enjoy making wine and smoking cigars. I am a former marathon runner but in recent years I have replaced running with cycling. I fluently speak both Spanish and English.
